Ask IQ about a document

Have IQ read a whole document, attached or already saved, and answer from it with the clause and page it relied on.

Screenshots are retaken from IQ Entities on every release. Updated 14 October 2026.

Articles, shareholders' agreements and facility letters are long, and the question is usually narrow: what is the quorum, which matters need shareholder consent, when does the facility fall due. IQ can read the whole document and answer from it, citing where each answer came from, so you check the clause rather than read the document again.

The question that decides where to start: is the document already in IQ Entities?

The document is Do this
Saved under a company in IQ Entities Name it in your question; IQ finds and reads it
On your computer or in an email Attach it to the question
A scan or photograph saved in IQ Entities Attach the file itself instead; see the tips

Ask about a document you have

  1. Click Ask IQ on the company's page, or open IQ Assistant.

  2. Click + in the question box and choose Upload from device, or drop the file onto the chat. IQ reads PDFs and images as they are, and Word, Excel and PowerPoint files as their text.

  3. Ask for what you need, and for the reference:

Read the attached articles in full. What is the quorum for board meetings, may a director vote on a matter in which they have an interest, and what is the minimum number of directors? Give the article number for each answer.

Ask about a document saved in IQ Entities

Name the document and the company: "Read the shareholders' agreement saved under Northwind Holdings Limited and list every matter that needs the consent of the shareholders, with the clause number."

IQ searches the company's documents to find it, then reads its text page by page until it has the whole document, not only the passages its search matched. It cites the document and the page for each fact.

Reading changes nothing, so with the usual setting IQ goes ahead. If you chose Ask before every action, it asks before each read, with a card saying IQ wants to look up the document text. Click Always allow in this chat to let it read the rest of the document without asking again.

Check the answer

  • Open the page IQ cites and read the clause. A quorum "of two" may be "two, one of whom must be a non-executive".
  • Where IQ says a document has no readable text, it is telling you it could not read it, not that the document is blank.

Tips from practice

  • Saved documents are read from the text IQ Entities found in them when they were uploaded. A scan or a photograph has none, so attach the file to the chat instead.
  • Ask for a table ("one row per matter, with the clause") when you will paste the answer into a note.
  • To turn what IQ reads into register entries, see Record the changes in signed minutes with IQ; for a pile of documents, the Document Inbox is quicker.
  • Attach up to about 18 MB of files with one question.
