Appoint or resign a director through IQ

Ask IQ to record a director joining or leaving, read what it will write, and approve it.

Screenshots are retaken from IQ Entities on every release. Updated 14 October 2026.

When a change to the board is settled and you are in the middle of something else, you can tell IQ rather than opening the register: who is joining or leaving, which company, and from what date. IQ records the appointment or the resignation through the same register you would use, and only once you approve it.

Tell IQ the change

  1. Click Ask IQ on the company's page, so IQ knows which company you mean, or open IQ Assistant and name it.

  2. Give the person, the role and the date the board decided:

Helena Marsh was appointed a director of Northwind Holdings Limited on 30 September 2026, with the title Finance Director. Ada Holloway resigned as a director on the same day.

IQ finds the person and the appointment, and asks to make each change.

Read what IQ will write

  1. Click the heading of each card to see its Request. An appointment is IQ wants to create a principal. with the Title and Start date.

  2. A resignation is IQ wants to update the principal. with the End date. Dates are written year first: 2026-09-30 is 30 September 2026.

  3. Click Approve for each one you agree with. See Approve what IQ changes.

The person a card is about is not printed on it, so read the line IQ writes above the cards saying what it is about to do. If in doubt, Reject and ask IQ to name the person and the company first.

Check afterwards

  • Open Directors & Officers for the company. The new director is listed; the one who resigned shows under Show former with the end date.
  • The appointment and the resignation each raise their Companies House filing task for a UK company, as when you record them yourself. See Report a new director to Companies House and Report a director leaving.

Tips from practice

  • Resigning on the register page warns you when the director holds authorities that would outlive the appointment. IQ does not show that warning, so ask it: "Which bank mandates and powers of attorney does Ada Holloway hold?" See End a leaver's authorities.
  • Give a new person's name exactly as on their appointment letter. Someone not yet in IQ Entities has to be created first, and IQ asks before it does that too.
  • Use the date the board resolved, not today's, when you are catching up.
