Change an entity's status
Move an entity to a new status, such as dormant or dissolving, and record the day it actually happened.
Screenshots are retaken from IQ Entities on every release. Updated 14 October 2026.
An entity's status changes when it goes dormant, when the members resolve to wind it up, or when a strike-off is applied for. Some statutory deadlines run from the day that happened, so IQ Entities asks for that date whenever the status moves.
The question that decides the date: on what day did the company actually reach this status? Use the day of the decision, not the day you are recording it.
Change the status
Open the entity, choose Entity Details, and click Edit.
In the Tax & structure card, open Status and choose the new status. The statuses on offer depend on the entity's jurisdiction.
Enter Status effective from: the day the members resolved to wind up, or the day the decision to strike off was taken.
Click Save changes.
| Situation | Status effective from |
|---|---|
| The members resolved last month to wind up the company | The date of the resolution |
| The board decided to apply for strike-off | The date of the board's decision |
| Nobody knows when it happened | Leave it blank |
Left blank, any deadline raised says it was dated from when the change was recorded rather than from when it happened.
Tips from practice
- Status effective from only appears while the status is changing, and is not kept afterwards: it describes this change, not the company.
- Record the resolution or board minute before you change the status, so the date you enter has its evidence on file.
- The register's Status filter, and its Companies House filter for what the registrar says, find every company in a given state; see Find an entity in the register.
