Appoint a director
Record a new director or secretary on the company's register, dated from the day the board appointed them.
Screenshots are retaken from IQ Entities on every release. Updated 14 October 2026.
When the board appoints a director or a company secretary, the appointment goes on the company's register of officers in IQ Entities first. Everything that follows (the Companies House filing, board packs, the directors listing) is built from that record, so the date and the service address you enter here are the ones that get filed.
The question that decides the details: is this a new appointment, or one you are catching up on? Use the date the board resolved, not today's, whenever the meeting was in the past.
Open the register
Open the company and choose Directors & Officers under Governance in the sidebar.
Click Add appointment.
Choose who is being appointed
Keep Person selected for an individual, search for them and choose them from the list. Choose Entity instead when a company is being appointed as a corporate director or secretary.
If the person is not in IQ Entities yet, click New person, enter their first and last name and click Add person. Their full details can be completed on their own page afterwards.
Click Next.
Set the role and the date
Choose the Role, for example Director or Secretary. Add a Title if the company uses one; the suggestions under the field fill it in with one click.
Enter the Elected / appointed date from the board minutes.
Under Service address (Companies House), tick Same as the company’s registered office, or enter the correspondence address the director has given you.
Click Next, check the summary on Review, and click Add appointment.
The appointment joins the register straight away. Unless you ticked Named in the incorporation statement, IQ Entities raises a task for the Companies House appointment filing, which you will find on the company's compliance Calendar.
| Situation | What to choose |
|---|---|
| A founding director, listed in the company's incorporation documents | Tick Named in the incorporation statement. Companies House already has them, so no appointment filing is raised. |
| A director appointed since incorporation | Leave Named in the incorporation statement clear, so the appointment filing is raised. |
| A company is being appointed | Choose Entity on the first step. Only the roles a company may hold are offered. |
| You are recording last month's appointment today | Enter the date the board resolved in Elected / appointed. |
Tips from practice
- Record the service address when you appoint. It is what the appointment and change-of-details filings use, so nobody has to type it again later.
- The person on an appointment cannot be changed afterwards. If the wrong person was appointed, delete the entry; if one director is replacing another, resign the old appointment and add a new one.
- With This group selected in the header, the register shows appointments across the whole group and Add appointment is hidden. Switch to This entity to add one.
- A change of Title is for your own register only; Companies House does not hold job titles.
Next: Record a director's resignation, or produce a directors listing for the board pack.
