Record a director's resignation

End a director's appointment on the date they ceased to hold it, keeping them on the register as a former officer.

Screenshots are retaken from IQ Entities on every release. Updated 14 October 2026.

When a director resigns, retires or is removed, the appointment ends on a date, and that date matters: Companies House counts the 14 days for the cessation filing from it. Resigning an appointment in IQ Entities records the date and keeps the director on the register as a former officer, so the history of the board stays complete.

The question to answer first: did the director actually leave, or was the appointment recorded by mistake?

Situation What to choose
The director has resigned, retired or been removed Resign. The appointment is kept with its end date.
The appointment was entered in error and never happened Delete. The entry is erased from the register.
You resigned the wrong director, or entered the wrong date Undo resignation on the same menu, then resign again if needed.

Resign the appointment

  1. Open the company's Directors & Officers page and click the row menu beside the director.

  2. Choose Resign.

  3. Enter the Resignation date: the day they ceased to be a director, from their resignation letter or the board minutes, not the day you are recording it.

  4. If the dialog warns that the director holds authorities that would outlive the appointment, decide whether to end them now. End a leaver's authorities explains the choice.

  5. Click Resign appointment.

Find former directors

  1. The director leaves the current list. Tick Show former to see everyone who has left; the number beside it says how many there are.

Former appointments are shown dimmed, with the date they ended.

Tips from practice

  • If the director is the source of someone's access to IQ Entities, the dialog says so before you resign them: their access to that company ends with the appointment.
  • Undo resignation is for a resignation recorded in error. It withdraws the cessation filing that was raised, unless it has already gone to Companies House; that task then stays open for someone to resolve with the registrar.
  • A director who left and later returns is appointed again with a new date, rather than having the old resignation undone.
  • Check the director's bank mandates and powers of attorney on the same day. A resignation from the board does not end an authority held in the director's own name.

Before this: Appoint a director. Next: End a leaver's authorities.
