Correct a mistaken ledger entry

Undo a wrong issuance or other entry on the securities ledger with a compensating entry that says why.

Screenshots are retaken from IQ Entities on every release. Updated 14 October 2026.

An allotment entered twice, or against the wrong holder, has to come off the register, but the register is evidence of what it recorded, so nothing is deleted from it. Instead, reverse the entry: IQ Entities adds a compensating entry, the balances go back, and both entries stay visible with your reason beside them.

Reverse the entry

  1. Open the company and choose Transactions under Securities in its sidebar. Find the mistaken entry in the Securities ledger and choose the actions button at the end of its row.

  2. Choose Reverse entry.

  3. Under Why is this being reversed?, say what went wrong. This is recorded on the ledger and is what anyone reading the register later sees.

  4. Check the Effective date. It is today by default, and should be the date the correction takes effect, not the date of the original entry. Choose Reverse entry.

The original entry is marked reversed, and the compensating entry beside it reads "reverses an earlier entry".

Which date to use

Situation Effective date
The mistake was found and corrected today Today
The board resolved to correct the register on an earlier date The date of that resolution

A register drawn as at a date before the correction still shows the position that stood then, which is why the date is not backdated to the original entry. It cannot be earlier than the entry it corrects, or in the future.

Tips from practice

  • Reversing one leg of a share transfer reverses both legs together and marks the transfer reversed, so the shares are never counted twice.
  • Any certificate in force over the holding is cancelled and reissued for the restored balance, under a new number.
  • To end a holding that was right at the time, use Close holding… from its menu on the cap table rather than reversing the entries that created it. The position goes to nil on the date you give, and the holder stays on the register as a former member. See Read a company's cap table.
