Check a company against the register
Compare a UK company's record with the live Companies House register, see where they differ, and bring the register's details in.
Screenshots are retaken from IQ Entities on every release. Updated 14 October 2026.
The public register and your records drift apart in small ways: a director appointed before the company came to you, an office move filed by a previous adviser, a notice from the registrar nobody forwarded. Checking a company against the register shows every difference in one place, and any notice Companies House has given about the company, so you can decide which side is right before the next filing.
Run the check
Open the company and choose Registrations. The Companies House register card appears for a UK company whose home registration carries its company number.
Click Check register. IQ Entities reads the company's entry on the live register.
Read the differences
Read any notice at the top first. A notice such as Proposal to strike off needs action before anything else.
The badge counts the differences. For each detail that differs, Ours: is what IQ Entities holds and Register: is what Companies House shows.
Under Directors, At registry, not held is a director on the register that your record does not have, and Held, not at registry is one you hold that the register does not show.
Open Everything on the register to see the register's full entry for the company.
Bring the register's details in
Click Sync to entity when the register is right. It applies the register's company name, registered office and directors that can be matched, and fills in the incorporation date, accounting reference date and governing legislation where your record has none.
Read the summary of what was applied. A director the register and your records do not line up on is listed as not applied, for you to review by hand.
Click Re-check to confirm the two now agree. In sync means the record matches the register.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| The register is right and your record is out of date | Sync to entity |
| Your record is right because a change has not been filed yet | File it from its task instead of syncing: see File a form from its task |
| The register is wrong | Correct it with Companies House; syncing would copy the mistake |
Tips from practice
- Check a company the day it comes under your management, before the first filing you make for it.
- Syncing makes your record match the register, so do not sync a company with a change you have recorded but not yet filed.
- The line at the foot of the card says when the register was last read. Check again before relying on an old result.
