End a leaver's authorities
Close the powers of attorney and bank mandates a departing director holds in their own name, on the day they leave.
Screenshots are retaken from IQ Entities on every release. Updated 14 October 2026.
A director who resigns from the board can still be named on a power of attorney or a bank mandate. Those authorities do not end by themselves, and a bank will keep accepting a signature until it is told otherwise. IQ Entities checks for them when you record the resignation, so the list of what to end is in front of you at the moment it matters.
What decides the outcome is how each authority is held:
| How the authority is held | What happens when the director resigns |
|---|---|
| In their name (granted to the person) | It stays in force until you end it. Tick the option in the resignation dialog to end it on the same date. |
| Through the office (granted to whoever is a director) | It passes on to whoever holds the office. Nothing needs ending. |
End them with the resignation
On Directors & Officers, open the director's row menu, choose Resign and enter the Resignation date. Record a director's resignation walks through this part.
Read the warning under the date. It lists each authority the director holds, marked in their name or through the office, and the bank mandates they sign on.
Tick the option to also end the authorities held in their name on the resignation date.
Click Resign appointment. The authorities and the appointment end on the same date.
If the dialog shows the authorities without the option to end them, it says that a review task will list them once the resignation is saved. Work through that task on the company's Authorities page.
Tips from practice
- Tell the bank the same day. Ending the authority in IQ Entities records the change; it does not notify anyone outside your organisation.
- Granting an authority to an office rather than a person, with Whoever holds an office under Held by, means it moves with the role and never needs ending when someone leaves.
- Use the As at date on the Authorities page to show who could sign on a past date, for example the day before the resignation, when an auditor asks.
Before this: Record who can sign for a company. Related: Set up a bank mandate.
