Record a director's personal code

Save the personal code a director received from Companies House identity verification, so filings that name them can be made.

Screenshots are retaken from IQ Entities on every release. Updated 14 October 2026.

Since identity verification began, a director who has verified their identity with Companies House receives an 11-character personal code. A director's appointment, and a confirmation statement that confirms the directors' verification, cannot be filed without it. The code is the person's, not the company's, so it is saved once on the person and used for every company they serve.

Save the code on the person

  1. Open the person and choose Companies House in their pages. The Personal codes (identity verification) list on the Companies House codes page, and the Fix it link on a filing task that needs the code, both bring you here.

  2. In the Companies House identity verification card, enter the code in Personal code.

  3. Answer Does the name on file match their verified name? If the name you hold differs from the one they verified with, choose the reason. Companies House asks this on every filing that states their verified identity, and each filing sends the answer saved here.

  4. Click Save personal code.

When a filing is waiting for a code

A filing task that names a director without a code lists them under Needed to file, and its File a registry form button stays unavailable until the code is saved. Click Fix it beside the missing code to open the person's page.

Tips from practice

  • Companies House checks the code against the codes it has issued, so one that only looks right is still rejected. Copy it from the director's own confirmation, not from memory.
  • The date shown beside a saved code is when it was recorded in IQ Entities, not when the director verified.
  • The card appears only for someone with a UK appointment or significant control of a UK company, past or present, or who already has a code on file.
